Tucked away in Sri Lanka’s tea country

Tucked away in one of the lesser - known valleys surrounding Hatton, the calm waters of the reservoir are surrounded by rolling green tea plantations and misty mountains. Kayak or canoe past the pockets of tiny islands that float on the reservoir or walk around its perimeter at sunrise or sunset for the best views of this picturesque lake.

A striking 97 meter waterfall located within close proximity to St. Claire’s falls. The waterfall gets its name from a British coffee planter whose plantations were located close to the falls.

A wide waterfall that cascades over three rocky outcrops into a large pool. The waterfall cuts through St. Claire’s tea estate and is part of the Kotmale Oya, a tributary of the Mahaweli River.

An Anglican stone church built in 1878 during the British colonial era. The church is home to relics of a bygone era, including an ancient pipe organ and a 140 year old Bible. Nestled on a hillock among tall Cypress and African Tulip trees the church overlooks the Castlereagh Reservoir and surrounding tea fields.

Falling down 413 feet, this is the 8th highest waterfall on the island and you're guaranteed to feel miniscule as you stand at its base. The top of the falls is also accessible and offers breathtaking views of the bordering seven virgin hills.

Horton Plains National Park with its grasslands, cloud forests and riverine environments is an important birding area. Stop by the Arrenga pool to catch a glimpse of the elusive Ceylon Whistling Thrush (Arrenga) or other birds like the Ceylon white eye, Ceylon wood pigeon, Yellow - eared bulbul, Dull-blue flycatcher, and many more.

High up in the clouds of Sri Lanka’s central highlands towers the holy mountain, Adams Peak or Sri Pada. There are three main routes to the top - via Hatton, Ratnapura and Kuruvita. The easiest route is through Hatton and is the most popular path taken by locals and foreign visitors. Most visitors climb at night along well - lit trails to reach the summit for sunrise where you can expect jaw dropping views of mist - capped peaks and valleys of the Peak Wilderness mountain ranges. While the Peak Wilderness region is considered a biodiversity hotspot, it is threatened by the large numbers of visitors who climb Adam’s Peak each year. If you're visiting, tread lightly; abstain from consuming alcohol or smoking on the trails, avoid veering off the main trail, carry all your waste, refrain from touching animals or picking flowers and other plants.

Breathe in the cool, crisp mountain air as you journey across foggy tea plantations, old pine forests, and charming mountain towns towards the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country. Hatton is one of the busiest railway stations in the Nuwara Eliya district, especially during the pilgrimage season to Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) from December to May.
